Today, cloud computing is the natural environment for storing and processing data. However, for years, many organizations, especially those in regulated industries, have struggled with one fundamental question: where exactly is our data located and who has access to it?<\/span><\/p>\n

Amazon Web Services has long had data centers in Europe. For some companies, this is sufficient, but not for all. There are industries that require full, legally guaranteed operational control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In response to these needs, AWS European Sovereign Cloud<\/span><\/a> is being created. An independent cloud computing platform designed for Europe, managed exclusively by European Union citizens working from locations within the Union.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is changing?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

AWS has announced that the new sovereign cloud will be operated exclusively by European Union citizens employed and working in EU countries, subject solely to EU law. This applies to access to data centers as well as technical support and customer service.<\/span><\/p>\n

The introduction of the \u201ccitizenship requirement\u201d is part of a consistent strategy in which digital sovereignty is not a declaration but a real operating standard. For customers, this means:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • no critical operational dependencies outside the EU,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • full compliance with EU regulations and practices,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • security managed exclusively within EU jurisdiction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This is not a separate version of existing AWS services. It is a new, independent infrastructure with its own availability regions, operations team, and operating model, built from the ground up with European legal and organizational requirements in mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    When and where?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

    The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is scheduled to launch by the end of 2025. The project is supported by an investment of \u20ac7.8 billion through 2040. The first region will be launched in Brandenburg, Germany, with more to follow in the coming years.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Why does this matter?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

    Regulatory requirements are increasing every year. New EU directives such as NIS2, DORA, and increasingly strictly enforced GDPR provisions are being implemented. For many companies, this means not only meeting standards, but also documenting that data is processed and protected in accordance with EU regulations at every level: physical, logical, and operational.<\/span><\/p>\n
